Rice is a wonderful, tasty and healthy side dish or main dish that can be had with any meal. However, preparing rice can be an arduous process if you do not know how to cook it.
Having a rice cooker is essential if you want to prepare it on a daily basis, but a microwave will suffice if you want to cook it from time to time.
It is simple, saves times and comes out perfect almost every time. Microwaved rice is fluffy, has no clumps, no residual water and you do not need to check on it constantly. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to cook rice in microwave.
The first thing you have to do is measure the rice and water in the correct ratio. It is the most essential part and people often mess it up. If you are cooking 2 cups of rice, you will need 3 and a half cups of water. The multiplication factor for water is 1.75 times the amount of rice.
Put the measured rice in a microwave safe bowl. Make sure that it fills up to halfway or less since cooked rice will overflow in the microwave as it expands while cooking.
Add the measured cups of water; you can also add salt/seasoning if you want. The bowl has to be covered, but make sure it is not airtight because steam will be released during the cooking process.
Now set it to cook on high for about 20 minutes for two cups of rice if you have a 800W microwave. You should calculate the amount of time that is needed for more or less cups of rice.
Here comes the most important part: once the microwave is done, do not open the lid. Leave it to sit on its own in the microwave (leave it turned off). The rice cooks itself in the residual steam produced during the microwave process.
If you open the cover, you will lose all the steam and the rice will not cook any further.
You can leave the rice in the microwave to cook for about 30 minutes if you are making two cups. It does not have to be monitored during this time, so you can do other tasks around the house, or cook other items, during this time.
After about 30 minutes, your rice will be ready for consumption. It will be perfect, hot and can be had with any item that you have.
If you are in a hurry, though, you can add a few tablespoons of water to the rice, set the microwave to low and cook another five to six minutes. However, you will need to check manually if the rice has been cooked fully or not.
Preparing rice is an easy task if you have a microwave. Although the process is somewhat long, you will get perfect, fluffy, hot rice that can be had at any time.
